Main Street Wine & Spirits has been family owned and operated since 1919 — close to 90 years. "We've been here a long time," says owner Bill Goldberg. "We'll be here as long as you are."
In 1919, John Goldberg and his brother-in-law bought a
little market in a building next door to the current location.
They did business at this location for 32 years. In 1949,
a fire burned down the building next to this original
store. After the fire, John then bought this property
(their current location) and built a new, much larger,
store, which they moved into in 1951, and they've been
there ever since.
After serving in the Army, John's twin sons Marvin and Allan took over the store when John retired in the 1960s. They expanded the building roughly 25% but started focusing on spirits, as supermarkets started to supplant the local markets for food and grocery items.
Marvin's son Bill, the current owner, says, "I grew up
here in the store, and I've been full time since 1985.
There's no better teacher than experience." Bill values
his customers and enjoys having the day-to-day contact.
There's a neighborhood feeling when you walk in, which
comes from generations of connecting with the Ashland
community. |
